A Business Link for London survey has revealed that sales and marketing continues to be the key priority for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Even small improvements in sales and marketing can bring big rewards.
A survey of SMEs conducted in April 2006 by Business Link for London revealed that sales and marketing remain the prime concerns for small businesses.
According to their primary business needs, respondents were asked to rank eight areas. Results showed that 28 per cent rated sales and marketing as the area they needed most help with; while 20 per cent chose “people issues” and 15 per cent “general business issues”.
Why are sales and marketing such an issue for smaller businesses? Because SMEs generally don’t have the solid streams of income that larger companies do, they have to devote disproportionate time and energy to winning new customers and keeping existing ones.
But there are straightforward ways of making improvements. Even a relatively inexpensive marketing plan can give a business a significant boost. And getting to grips with the basics of closing a sale can make a real difference in terms of maximising revenues.
